Pilgrim Pines Summer Camp Thank You’s

By Tracy Halter-Balin, Outdoors Ministries Team member

We plan and prepare for months beforehand and now Summer Camp 2019 is a sweet memory! New and returning campers and new and returning counselors and age group directors all got to experience the elation and other emotions that come from being at camp for a week (or more!). There was a Jr. High age camper that came for 3 weeks – she loves camp that much! Her mom is a camp alumni and knows what a special place Pilgrim Pines is for so many. And thank goodness for our volunteer counselors and directors! (Did you know that all of our counselors and directors are VOLUNTEERS??) Some spent one week of their hard earned vacation time from work and many others were with us up to 4 weeks.

With that, the Outdoor Ministries Team (OMT) would like to give our heartfelt thanks to our Summer Pastors-At-Camp (our PAC’s) who planned, prepared and presented our Summer Theme “Peace Works” components each day. Their presence is essential to our program and we couldn’t do this without them. Please join us in thanking Rev. Megan Owens (2 weeks), Rev. Erin Beardemphl, Rev. Donald Shenk, Rev. Jason Sisk-Provencio and Rev. Lee Yates. They brought each day’s stories to life in creative, memorable ways. We learned about Aloha, Ubuntu, Shalom, Agape, Heiwa, and Si Se Puede both in morning messages and our evening Vespers. Each PAC brought their own uniqueness and gifts to our campers of all ages and abilities.

While too many to mention, camp also would not be possible with out the 90 or so volunteer counselors and directors. We call them our “front line” ~ basically on call for the entire week (with a much deserved daily break) for their campers no matter what the need. Not always easy but truly fulfilling and live-changing for so many of us. We have 5 different age groups each week at camp and their directors work diligently to make sure the week is planned out with fun, engaging, thematic activities.

Those of us on OMT can talk about Pilgrim Pines and what it means to so many for hours so if you have any thoughts or questions or just want to chat, let us know! One of the main purposes of this article is to thank you, the members and friends of the SCNC/UCC Conference, for your generous donations toward our Campership Fund, your prayers for our camp community and for all the ways you help us continue this critical ministry.
