POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Specification: Exempt from overtime pay

Job Function: Full Time (40-hour work week)

Job Title: Associate Minister

Job Objective: The Associate Minister shall be under the general supervision of the Church Council and under the guidance and direction of the Senior Minister. The Associate Minister will direct the ministerial programs for children and youth and participate in the full life of the congregation including pastoral care, worship, adult education and membership development.

Primary Responsibilities: Children & Youth Ministry (50%)
Pastoral Duties (50%)

Minimum Requirements: Ordained minister in good standing with the United Church of Christ. Able to fully support the theological, open and affirming, and social justice stance of the church. Proficient in basic computer skills. In possession of or able to secure a valid California driver’s license. Must pass a background check.

Education: Master of Divinity degree from an accredited theological seminary

Experience: Two years of experience in church ministry or leadership preferred

Physical Requirements: Ability to work 40-hour per week schedule that will fluctuate with job responsibilities and church seasons. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.

Environmental Factors: Church facility is a combination of old and new structures and may contain allergens. Church facility contains areas where stairs provide the most expedient access, but elevator access is available.

• The Associate Minister will be present for the Sunday Service unless actively involved in the ministry of the church elsewhere, less vacation time, study leave, and sick time.
• The Associate Minister will maintain regular office hours to the extent possible given the responsibilities of the position.

PASTORAL DUTIES (50%)

Worship Leadership (~12%)
• Assist with planning and leading Sunday morning services and special services throughout the year.
• Plan and lead the “Time with Our Children” during Sunday services.
• Preach 12 times per year, including special services like Youth Sunday, Camp Sunday, Children’s Sabbath and Gifts to the Manger. On preaching Sundays, coordinate all aspects of the Service of Celebration and write the lead article for that week’s edition of The Pilgrim.
• Officiate weddings and memorial services as needed or requested.
• Plan and lead worship in the absence of the Senior Minister.

Pastoral Care (~18%)
• Act as the primary contact and “first responder” on the church staff for pastoral care, including calls and visits to homes, care facilities, and hospitals.
• Offer pastoral counseling, including appropriate referrals

General Ministries and Staff Duties (~10%)
• Collaborate with Senior Minister to plan and facilitate new member orientation gatherings at least twice per year.
• Perform other duties of an ordained minister and accept other staff responsibilities as requested by the Senior Minister or Church Council.
• Attend staff, administrative, and worship leadership meetings.
• Maintain relationships with the Central Association, the Southern California Nevada Conference, and the National Setting of the United Church of Christ.

Adult Education (~8%)
• Plan and teach 4 sessions of about 6 classes each throughout the year.

Social Justice and Outreach (~2%)
• Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Social Justice and Outreach.
• Participate in the work of social justice organizations in the region, state, and nation and connect FCCLB to the work of those organizations.
• Serve as a member of the UCO or DAYS Board of Directors.

MINISTRY OF CHILDREN & YOUTH (50%)

General (~10%)
• Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Christian Education.
• Ensure all church programs are in compliance with the Children and Youth Protection Policy.
• In consultation with the Board of Christian Education, plan and implement special and ongoing programs for children and youth.
• Identify needs, create and facilitate new programs for children and youth.
• Plan, recruit volunteers, and lead a confirmation program every 2-3 years, as needed.
• Create opportunities for intergenerational ministry.
• Keep congregation informed of and involved in the children and youth ministries through regular communications.

Sunday School (~10%)
• In consultation with the Board of Christian Education, select and maintain curricula for the Sunday School program, recruit and train volunteers, and plan and implement the overall Sunday School program.

Nursery (~5%)
• Recruit, interview, hire, supervise and support paid childcare workers and volunteer staff for the nursery.
• Schedule childcare workers for all church events requiring childcare.

Worship (~10%)
• Plan and lead the Children’s Chapel Program.
• Facilitate youth creation and leadership of Youth Sunday.
• Plan and lead the early service on Christmas Eve (which may include a pageant) to maximize the potential for participation of children, youth, and their families.

Community Building (~10%)
• Plan and implement 6 Parents’ Night Out events throughout the year.
• Provide opportunities for shared ministry between FCCLB youth and the youth of other local congregations.
• Coordinate the participation of FCCLB children and youth in events and programs of the wider United Church of Christ, including Pilgrim Pines.

Leadership & Professional Development (~5%)
• In consultation with the Senior Minister and with consideration of other responsibilities, offer leadership within Association and Conference youth programs.
• Participate in ongoing continuing education programs to continually hone the practice of the art of ministry and leadership.
