Global Ministries Trip to Puerto Rico

By Danny Bradfield, Global Ministries Committee co-chair

In January 2019, the Global Ministries committee from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Pacific Southwest Region and the United Church of Christ Southern California / Nevada Conference sent a group of people on a mission/service trip to Puerto Rico.

When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017, some 3,000 people died. Most of the island suffered heavy damage, and electricity was knocked out for months. Because of the difficult situation in Maria’s aftermath, 300,000 people have left Puerto Rico, which makes recovery and rebuilding even more difficult.

Our work in Puerto Rico involved a number of different tasks, working on houses and other buildings in the communities surrounding Camp Morton, the camp owned by the Puerto Rican Disciples of Christ. More significantly, though, was the fact that our presence represented to the people of Puerto Rico the thoughts and prayers of so many others in our congregations and communities back home. In short, our presence there let them know that they were not forgotten.

We learned much from our Puerto Rican hosts. We gained a greater understanding of the difficulties of recovery following a disaster like Hurricane Maria, including the frustrations of dealing with bureaucracies and a government that aren’t always as compassionate or as efficient as we’d like them to be. We also were inspired by the faith, the hope, and the determination of so many.

Thank you for supporting the work of our PSWR church and the Global Ministries committee; and please continue to keep the people of Puerto Rico in prayer as they continue their rebuilding efforts.
