The historic Neighborhood Church of Palos Verdes Estates, California (a United Church of Christ Congregation) is seeking an organist/accompanist.  This 3/8 + position offers an opportunity to join a small worship team that aims to sustain the church’s cherished and longstanding excellence in the tradition of sacred music supported by the Covenant Choir and the church’s Glatter-Gotz/Rosales tracker organ, and at the same time embrace other traditions as the congregation moves toward a wider range in its worship celebrations. In addition to a regular and active worship schedule the church is host to many wedding ceremonies and memorial services.

 

Job Title: Church Organist                                         REPORTS TO: Director of Music Ministries

I.         Purpose
Assist the Director of Music Ministries in developing and executing creative and inspirational worship services. This includes providing appropriate and inspirational music (organ or piano) of a professional nature in both worship and rehearsal settings. The Church Organist also participates in and provides music leadership as required for special church services (IE Christmas, Easter, Vespers, Memorials and Weddings) and at church musical events. The Organist also serves as an ex officio member of the Music Ministry (committee).

II.       The ideal candidate will have:

A.   At least a masters degree in music, preferably in organ performance, or equivalent.
B.   Demonstrated proficiency in playing hymns, solo work and accompaniment on both organ and piano.
C.   Significant sight reading and open score reading capabilities for choir rehearsals.
D.  High personal and professional standards; be self-disciplined and well organized.
E.   Excellent relational skills in working with other staff people and volunteers.

III.      Experience

A.    3-5 years of experience playing Organ in a Christian Church setting.

IV.     Primary Responsibilities

A.  Work as an important member of the music team, which includes the Director of Music Ministries and Music Ministries (committee).
B.   Provide music for Sunday Worship.
C.   Provide music for special worship services, including Christmas, Easter, and All-Saints Vespers Service.
D.  Provide music for memorials and weddings and when unavailable arrange for a suitable substitute.
E.   Rehearse and/or assist in coordinating rehearsals of solo and ensemble participation, both vocal and instrumental, for all worship services.
F.   With the approval of the Director of Music Ministries, schedule regular maintenance of the organ and pianos by qualified technicians.

G.  Maintain a current list of qualified substitute organists who would be available on an emergency basis and, with the approval of the Director of Music Ministries, provide substitute organists and accompanists for scheduled absences.

H.  As an accompanist, the Organist shall:

1.   Accompany the Covenant Choir at the regular weekly rehearsal and Sunday morning warm-up.
2.   Accompany or provide an acceptable accompanist for regular rehearsals.

I.   With the assistance of a recruited committee, coordinate all aspects of at least 1 annual organ recital featuring a world class performing artist.

V.      Compensation

A.    Annual salary: $23,000 – 30,000 – negotiable based on education and experience.
B.     Opportunity for substantial number of weddings and memorial services.
