30th annual interfaith pre-Thanksgiving service to feature UCI law professor Michele Bratcher Goodwin

Irvine United Congregational Church and University Synagogue’s annual joint service celebrates a lasting friendship between two progressive congregations

The 30th anniversary of the Irvine United Congregational Church and University Synagogue Pre- Thanksgiving Service will feature author, advocate  and social commentator Michele Bratcher Goodwin, founding director of the Center for Biotechnology and Global Health Police at UC Irvine where she holds joint appointments in the School of Law and Program in Public Health.

The service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at IUCC, 4915 Alton Parkway, Irvine.

Goodwin is one of the world’s leading authorities on the regulation of medicine, science and biotechnology. Her scholarship defines new ways of thinking about the intersection of law, society, economics and the human body and she is a highly sought-after voice on civil liberties, reproductive justice and health, cultural politics, and human rights.

The Rev. Dr. Paul Tellström of IUCC and Rabbi Arnold Rachlis from University Synagogue will lead the service with music from the combined University Synagogue and IUCC Chancel Choir, and Cantor Ruti Braier.

About Michele Bratcher Goodwin
Among Goodwin’s many publications are “Policing the Womb,” “Fetal Protection Laws: Moral Panic & the New Constitutional Battlefront,” and “Parent Civil Unions: Rethinking the Nature of Families.” She’s been featured on National Public Radio, HBO-Vice, National Geographic and PBS shows and numerous publications. She won the Center for Reproductive Rights & Justice inaugural “Courage in Scholarship” award in 207 and was the Thurgood Marshall, Orange County Bar Association Professor of the Year in 2018.

Goodwin serves on the National Executive Committee of the American Civil Liberties Union and the board of directors for: the American Society of Law, Medicine, & Ethics and Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties.  She is also an alumna member of the board of directors for womenwinning, an organization dedicated to increasing the representation of pro-choice women in elected office. Goodwin’s charitable work extends internationally.  She is the chair of the board for Progressive Health Partnership, an NGO committed to improving reproductive healthcare and decreasing maternal and fetal morbidity in Uganda.  She is the former secretary general of the International Academy of Law and Mental Health and former Trustee of the Law and Society Association.
