Tackling the Big Issues: 4th and 5th in a Series of Reports from Central Association

By Elsa Seifert

In May 2014 Central Association held its Spring meeting.  During this time six social issues facing the churches were lifted up and discussed in small groups.  This is a summary of the fourth and fifth issues.  Previous publications of Connecting Voices carried summaries of the first three issues.

bad economyTHE ECONOMY

Political action is needed to stabilize an ever-increasing downward spiral, affecting all areas of the UCC.  Financial support is dwindling everywhere, and many folks in  congregations are jobless.  Higher prices were of great concern. Sustainable development, not only in other countries but also in our own communities was discussed.   A suggestion was made “to explore local processes from growers to the table”.  Jobs with living wages are all-important.

Most of the participants in this workshop were member of MCC In The Valley (which was welcomed as a new UCC congregation) and those whose churches were in the midst of study and voting to become Open and Affirming congregations.  Ways of affirming the diversity of UCC congregations were discussed.

Later in August the sixth issue report will appear.
