The purpose of the gathering is to refresh our sense of the importance, indeed centrality, of communion in the life and ministry of our churches.  Valued as a sacrament in the United Church of Christ and as an ordinance in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), communion is nevertheless understood somewhat differently in the two bodies.  We can learn from one another by reconsidering historic issues such as how frequently communion should be celebrated, who can and should preside, what restrictions if any there should be in participation in this sacred event, what are the appropriate words to use, how the Spirit of Christ becomes present in communion, what the bread and cup actually mean and become for us, and more.  We will share our experiences and our suggestions for enlivening and enriching communion.  There will also be present representatives of the liturgical churches, such as the Roman Catholic, to contribute their understanding of what they call the Eucharist.

We will end our time together enacting a communion service which will hope to build unity among those present.  And then we’ll have lunch!
