Tackling the Big Issues: 2nd in a Series of Reports from Central Association

by Elsa Seifert

In April 2014, Central Association held its Spring meeting and during this time lifted up six social issues facing the church.  This is a summary of the second issue.  The first appeared in the June l5th edition of Connecting Voices.

Civil Rights 3

CIVIL RIGHTS

Approximately ten persons discussed this issue.   Pasadena First Congregational UCC invited folks to a “sacred conversation” sharing experiences of struggle and discrimination related to race.  Afflicting all in the civil rights area are the issues of education of girls (i.e. girls abducted in Nigeria), sex trafficking, repeal of affirmative action, immigration reform, disability rights, voting rights and human rights of indigenous folks.

One resource for help in this area is:

Mr. Patrick Kennedy, Interfaith Community Organization, 562-984-2727, info@greaterlongbeachICO.orgThis group focuses on incarceration and restorative justice issues.

Central Association suggests that people tell us what they have been able to put together at their church or through other sources.  Also, if readers have other resources, we want to get the word out.  Rev. Al Cohen can be contacted at albertgcohen@gmail.com.
