     Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive , Laguna Beach is privileged to once again host the Buddhist Monks from the Drepung Loseling Phukhang Monastery in Southern India September 18-23, 2012.  For the last three years, the church has generously sponsored the monks’ visit, providing support and housing, while also opening the church doors to the monks and their many visitors.

     The Monks will start the creation of the Sacred Mandala on Tuesday September the 18th and complete it by Saturday the 22nd. On Sunday the 23rd the processional to the beach and dissolution of the Mandala will take place around 11:30 a.m. after the 10:00 worship service in the Neighborhood Church Sanctuary.   The church will be open to the public between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and all are invited to observe the monks at work and sit quietly in meditation.   On Friday, the church will open its Bridge Hall labyrinth from 3-7 p.m. for walking, reflection, and meditation as well.

     Additional events are also planned and open to the public.  On Friday evening, September 21, 7:00, the monks will offer the Lama Chopa, a meditation for World Peace, and invite all to attend this meaningful event.  On Saturday, September 22, a Tibetan meal will be prepared by the monks as a fundraiser in support of their monastery and ministry in southern India.  This will begin with a documentary film viewing of “An American Dream” at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary, with the 7:00 meal across the courtyard in Bridge Hall.

      On Sunday, September 23, the service begins at 10:00 a.m. with the Monks co-leading worship with the Rev. B. J. Beu of Neighborhood Congregational Church.  Following the service (around 11:30 a.m.) Rev. Beu and the Monks will lead a processional to the beach for a dissolution ceremony when they return the Mandala to the Pacific Ocean.

     Neighborhood Congregational Church is an Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ, and welcomes all people to worship and participation.  The church is located in Laguna Beach at the corner of Glenneyre and St.  Ann’s, one block east of Pacific Coast Highway.  Free parking is available throughout the week in the church parking lot across from Ralph’s parking lot at Cleo and Glenneyre.  Please alert the parking attendant that you are attending the monks’ event.
