Mel White at WeHo UCC

Rev. Mel White will be preaching at West Hollywood United Church of Christ, Sunday, September 30 at the 11 am service.

Mel began his faith journey as the “ghost writer” of Jerry Falwell’s biography.  While writing for the religious right, Mel started struggling with his own sexuality and spirituality.  West Hollywood Church and our Lazarus Project, headed then by Chris Glaser, were instrumental in Mel’s coming to understand himself, his spirituality and his sexuality as a Christian who is also a gay man.  After coming out, Mel went on to become the founding director of SOUL FORCE.  During the past 30 years, the Rev. Dr. Mel White and his partner, Gary Nixon, have traveled across the country, speaking on university campuses, teaching the “soul force” principles of Gandhi, King and Jesus, organizing people of faith to do justice, and confronting religious leaders whose anti-gay rhetoric White believes, “leads to the suffering and death of God’s lesbian and gay children.”

Mel is most known for this best-selling autobiography, “Stranger at the Gate.” In this moving testimony of faith, Mel White comes out of the closet to give hope to other gay and lesbian Christians, to confront the misleading anti-gay rhetoric of the radical right, and to launch his own fight for justice and understanding for God’s gay and lesbian children.

His most recent book is “Holy Terror: Lies the Christian Right Tells Us to Deny Gay Equality.”   “In 2008, millions of Americans thought Barack Obama’s election signaled the defeat and eventual disappearance of the “religious right.” In Holy Terror Mel White warns us that fundamentalist Christianity didn’t die that day.”

“The Tea-party movement is simply the ‘religious right’ in disguise,” he warns. “Half of those who identify with the Tea Party consider themselves a part of the old ‘religious right.’ They believe the Bible is the literal word of God and that America is a Christian nation. Sixty-three percent believe that abortion should be illegal. Eighty-two percent oppose same-sex marriage.”

“Think about it, White continues, “The Tea-party movement represents a clear and present danger NOW not just to the Gay community but to all Americans who refuse to support the values of the Christian right or join them in making this a Christian nation.”
