DSF Announces Spencer P. Austin Fund

The Spencer P. Austin Fund

Cutting-edge education for:

          Congregational Finance
          Church Administration
          Good Governance

In honor of one of the great leaders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Disciples Seminary Foundation is undertaking a new initiative to educate our church leaders in stewardship, church finance, congregational leadership, and church governance. DSF’s mission provides for the “formation and support of emerging theological leaders for diverse Christian communities.” For today’s congregations, DSF will offer cutting-edge education open to seminary students, clergy, and lay people to promote the understanding of the financial realities of congregational life – stewardship as a spiritual discipline and as a practical concern, church budgets and fiduciary responsibility, the realities of leading congregations with integrity and transparency, and necessity of good governance for more effective ministry.

In 2011-2012, the Spencer P. Austin Fund will allow Disciples Seminary Foundation to shape an integrated program in partnerships with seminaries and the church. We intend to begin courses for students, clergy, and lay leaders in Fall 2012.

The Rev. dr. Spencer P. Austin,
born December 15, 1909, was an ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), serving congregations in Oklahoma and Massachusetts. He served the United Christian Missionary Society, the Church Finance Council, Christian Theological Seminary, and as Regional Minister for Indiana. He was an officer of Church World Service, The National Council of Churches, and The World Council of Churches. He and other church leaders created the impetus for the Christian Church to have its own foundation to support ministry through permanent funds. He died April 21, 2010.

The Spencer P. Austin Fund has been launched with a generous gift from Lucille Ash, pictured below with her late husband, William Ash. Lucille is a long-time friend of Disciples Seminary Foundation and a member of our board. She has named this fund in memory of Spencer P. Austin, who was Lucille’s bible study teacher in Duncan, Oklahoma. DSF is enormously grateful for Lucille’s generosity, her own faithful stewardship, and her vision of service to churches.
