The success of religious and service organizations rides on the shoulders of volunteers, who belief in the mission and spend countless hours doing whatever it takes to succeed. Many of those volunteers are unsung individuals, who do all the work behind the scenes. This Conference owns a debt of gratitude to one of those unsung heroines: Mary Domb Mikkelson.
Mary Domb Mikkelson has spearheaded the Conference News Media Ministries for almost 10 years. Her responsibilities included "Connecting Voices" and "E-news." Mary has decided to retire after a decade in service to us. My personal journey with Mary began fourteen years ago, while pastoring the then UCC La Mesa in San Diego County. Mary and her late husband, Ron, had been searching for a new home church and have found that our congregation was exactly what she was looking for. As was our custom, I met with every new member to get to know them better and to help them explore their gifts and talents.
To make a long story, short, Mary was enthusiastic about engaging in some sort of ministry in the church. I mentioned we needed someone to take our newsletter to the "next level." She confessed that she had never worked in that area, but that she was willing to learn. Mary was up to the task. Quickly, she enrolled in a couple of publishing courses, make connections with the local media, and became our publishing "guru". After I became Conference Minister, I extended Mary an invitation to expand the scope of her work with us. She willingly accepted.
In fourteen years of ministry, Mary ranks among the top, most dedicated volunteers I have ever known! She has never sought the spotlight and has dedicated her talents to betterment of the Church. We wish her a wonderful retirement from this ministry and wish her a blessed journey in her future plans.
Well done, good and faithful servant!"
