BOUNDRY AWARENESS TRAINING

Boundary Awareness 2019

In our desire to empower educated, innovative and ethical lay & clergy leaders for ministry, we have been in a process of revising Boundary Awareness Training. If you haven't heard already, we have moved to a modular format. In 2019 we will be offering sixteen modules to choose from.

Boundary Awareness Training is required of all authorized ministers (Commissioned, Licensed, and Ordained). Each authorized minister is required to complete eight (8) hours of Boundary Awareness Training every five years.

We have replaced the one-day, eight-hour training with a modular approach. A four (4) hour module on sexual ethics will remain a core module and is required of all authorized ministers. The additional four (4) hours can be fulfilled by any combination of several new modules that have been developed to address all the areas of the Minister's Code of Ethics. The new modular training is intended to empower authorized ministers to properly identify and address the many issues around boundaries they will engage in their calling. You can choose to complete your training via the online portion of Sexual Ethics (part a) and one day of face-to-face modules or complete the online portions of sexual ethics (part a) and pick modules from multiple days. The cost for participating in all or part of a Boundary Awareness Training day is $30.00 (includes the text for the sexual ethics course and all handouts). Those who choose to attend multiple days will pay $30.00 for each day of training they attend. See list of offerings below.

NOTE: The Sexual Ethics Course now consists of an online session and a face-to-face session. The online session will be a two (2) hour module. Upon registering for Boundary Awareness Training you will receive a textbook "Sustaining Ministry: Foundations and Practices for Serving Faithfully" by Sondra Wheeler that you will have to read and apply in the online portion of the class. Instructions for the online conversations and reflection papers will be posted on the Leadership Academy portal.

After you have completed the online Sexual Ethics (part a) , you can choose from the other modules available or choose to pick one day to complete all eight (8) hours of your training based on your schedule and the location of the event. Each day of Boundary Awareness Training costs $30.00 to participate. The cost covers any or all of the training provided that day. For those who choose to attend multiple days, they will be charged $30.00 for each day.
Sexual Ethics part B – Face-to-Face
You will also register to participate in one of the face-to-face facilitated conversations on Sexual Ethics. The focus in these conversations will be on the Marks of Faithful and Effective Authorized Ministers (http://www.ucc.org/ministers_marks), the UCC Ordained Minister's Code (http://www.ucc.org/ministers_ordained-ministers-code), as well as the DOC Code of Ethics (http://disciples.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Ministerial_Code_of_Ethics-english.pdf), plus an open session where case studies will be discussed. Please ensure to download and print copies of these documents and have them handy for the face-to-face session. We will NOT supply printed material.

Case Studies: Each participant will be required to prepare a short case study that showcases a real life example of best practices or a violation/s of clergy boundaries. The case study does not have to be focused on sexual ethics per se but may address any aspect of clergy boundaries in a ministry setting - chaplaincy, specialized ministry, or congregational ministry.

There are many websites that offer guidelines on how to write a case study. Our purpose is not academic but to engage in open and honest conversations about boundary awareness for clergy. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind.

  • Keep your case study short and to the point (no more than 10 lines). We would like to give every person in the small group a chance to present their short case study.
  • Offer only the information that your small group will need to engage in a fruitful conversation about the case, no need to offer every bit of information. Sometimes it is OK to make guesstimates.
  • Keep the case real without offering any specifics on time, place or names of individuals.
  • Do not tell the group how you solved the problem. You may offer one or two prompts as to what direction a conversation might take. The solution to the case study may be different from what the real life solution was.
  • Print and bring at least 6 copies of your case study with you to hand to each member of you small group.
