Celebrating the Work of One of Our Own Selections from Thoughts from The Eye’s Mind: An April Shower of Poems*

by Rev. Ross W. B. Putnam

Inspired

There is escape from the clamor
There is relief from the din
There is separation from the hostility

         Political rhetoric hostile and loud
Violence and threats of violence ratchen up tension
         Fear invades the day

The temptation could be to hide
The answer could be to run
The urge could be to blame

Instead
Be open to possibility
Be receptive to reconciliation
Be inspired by hope

       Be moved by hope
Be kindled by glimmers of peace
       Be transformed by wisdom

               Be enlightened by ancient wisdom
Be illumined by an infant’s trusting smile
               Be ignited by others’ generosity

Be inspired by acts of generosity
                       Be radiant with belief
                       Be empowered

Connected

There is that which connects us all
More a bridge than a chasm
More a trail than a highway

There is that which unites us all
More a thought than a speech
More an idea than a tome

There is that which links us all
More a door than a wall
More a tent than a tomb

We are one
Which means
We are connected with all that was, and is, and will be

Stop and celebrate
With those you know and those you think you despise
For we are one – connected
