UCC Simi Valley LGBTQ Support Program Written Up in Simi Valley Acorn Paper
When our church leadership found out that our local PFLAG chapter was in danger of shutting down, we took that as an opportunity to start something new. The group had been supported and hosted by our church, but we now had to decide if our congregation was willing to take a leap of faith and step forward for the LGBTQ+ families in our community. The Board of Deacons unanimously voted to launch FFLUID (Families and Friends Living United In Diversity), a support group dedicated to offering unconditional love, heartfelt support and quality resources to members of the LGBTQ+ community, their families and friends.
As a result, FFLUID now has a membership of about 15 people, predominantly parents with children struggling with gender identity. Our facilitator, Shirley Corning, often works with families and individuals outside of our monthly support meetings to find them counseling resources and social connections and other members work to foster communication with other LGBTQ+ organizations in Ventura county. Recently the group caught the attention of the local newspaper, The Acorn.
