New Trail Offers New Experiences

by Rachel Chapman

trail1The Trail For All People, the first wheelchair accessible hiking trail in San Diego County, was dedicated on Wednesday September 7th. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulkner and Councilmember Mark Kersey  dedicated the trail not only to all people with disabilities but especially to Jas Arnold, the inspiration for the trail. Jas, an avid outdoorsman and hiker, passed away earlier this year from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. He had spent eight years advocating for the Trail.

The Trail For All People, located in the Black Mountain Open Space Park (12115A Black Mountain Road, San Diego, CA 92129 – (858) 538-8082), is a 1,100 foot flat loop overlooking the valley below. There are four shaded spots with benches to rest and enjoy the diverse native plants and wildlife common to the Black Mountain area. The information areas offer descriptions in Braille and will soon include audio information as well.

This first of its kind trail is truly for ALL people by being accessible to people with mobility challenges, elderly and very young peopletrail3
