Peter Makari Coming to Pilgrim Place

Peter makari2On Tuesday, April 26, 2016, Dr. Peter Makari will bring his extensive knowledge of the Middle East to Pilgrim Place when he speaks on “The Middle East and U.S. Christians: Our Call to be Peacemakers” at 11 a.m. in Decker Hall.  In addition to discussing pathways to peace, Peter will offer a personal assessment of the Syrian refugee crisis and highlight current UCC/DOC Global Ministries Middle East Initiatives.

An Egyptian-American born in Cairo, Dr. Makari has served for 16 years as Executive for the Middle East and Europe with the Common Global Ministries Board of the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  His return visit to Pilgrim Place has been arranged by UCC Pilgrims.

He worked with the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services (CEOSS) in Cairo from 1991-1994, and with the Middle East Council of Churches, based in Limassol, Cyprus from 1997-2000.  He served two terms as Co-Chair of the National Council of Churches’ Interfaith Relations Commission (2008-2013).

Dr. Makari earned an M.A. in Middle East studies at the American University in Cairo (1993) and a Ph.D. in Politics and Middle East studies from New York University (2003).  He is the author of Conflict and Cooperation: Christian-Muslim Relations in Contemporary Egypt (Syracuse University Press, 2007).  He, his wife and two daughters live in Olmsted Falls, OH, and are members of Olmsted Community Church (UCC).
