Lumad Representatives from the Philippines to Lead Symposium at Diamond Bar UCC

An Urgent Call for Awareness and Support!

The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) has issued an urgent call for support of the indigenous Lumad people of the southern island of Mindanao.  The Lumad are the victims of violent incursions by large mining, logging, and agricultural corporations forcefully seizing their native land. Young children, the elderly, and respected community leaders have been detained, imprisoned, and killed for standing up to these powerful companies.  Just a month ago, the evacuation center on the grounds of our sister UCC Philippines (UCCP) church in Davao City, was torched. Several people including children were seriously injured.  These 700 families who were driven out of their ancestral homes by violence, were once again rendered homeless.

From mid-April through mid-May a delegation of Lumad people, including children and adults who have survived the violence, will be traveling across the US to tell their story.   On Sunday, April 24, 2016, Diamond Bar UCC will welcome the delegation to the 10:00 am worship service with a formal informational program beginning at 12:00 noon.  Everyone is invited to hear about this tragic abuse of human rights and learn how to support the Lumad.
