2013 Annual Gathering Report from the Associate Conference Minister for Church Relations

By Rev. Libby Tigner, Associate Conference Minister for Church Relations

LibbyTigner     The primary focus of my work in this past year can be summed up in two words: General Synod.  As the Moderator of General Synod 29, I’ve been working closely with our national staff in Cleveland to help plan the shape and content of General Synod.  As the primary staff liaison for the Local Arrangements Committee, I’ve helped to develop the plan for how SCNC will provide extravagant welcome for our guest, and attended to many of the details for the Saturday events that we are hosting at Synod.  And my responsibilities in financial development have meant that I’ve been busy raising funds to support our hosting efforts.

The Local Arrangements Committee, co-chaired by Janet Vandevender and Paul Kittlaus, is functioning like a well-oiled machine.  We have nearly 400 volunteers who are ready to bake cookies, stuff registration bags, greet shuttle buses, make airport runs, provide child care, assist delegates, give directions and much more.  Paul and Janet will be at this Annual Gathering, and will be glad to assist you if you’d like to volunteer and have not yet signed up.

In May of 2012, our Board of Directors set a fundraising goal of $150,000 for General Synod.  As of this writing, we are a mere $16,000 short of attaining that goal!  Pledges have come in from individuals, local churches, and UCC-affiliated ministries and organizations from all around the country.  There is a sheet in your Annual Gathering packet with the most recent list of donors.  If you don’t see your local church listed, there is still time!  We will happily accept gifts and pledges for General Synod through the end of this calendar year.

Once General Synod is over, I will be able to focus more fully on the primary areas of responsibility with which the Board of Directors has tasked me: leadership development through the Search and Call process; building covenantal community through events and programs, and financial development.

In these areas of focus over the past year I’ve consulted with fifteen of our local churches in some part of their transition planning or Search and Call process, and am very excited about the new models for doing ministry and the dynamic new leaders that are emerging in the Conference.  We had one vitality event on worship, facilitated by the Rev. BJ Beu (2013 Annual Gathering Moderator and worship leader), and have redesigned our boundary training requirements and classes, utilizing a model that we anticipate will be easier to access while being more relevant to clergy.  I’ve completed two more classes from the Fundraising School at the University of Indiana Center for Philanthropy.

Thank you for the privilege of ministering with you in the Southern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Libby Tigner
