The Human Side of God

By Robinmarie McClement

“Asking the proper questions is the central action of transformation…
Questions are the keys that cause the secret doors of the psyche to swing open”
-Clarissa Pinkola Estes

Throughout my life I have been able to see the face of God in so many people I encounter. Each one a part of me, I hold them in my heart and they are for me a representation of all the color, diversity and beauty of our Creator.  Masterpieces of love, each face is a part of my Divine family. This concept is pretty familiar to most who are believers of a Higher Source.

However what seems to be more bewildering to my friends is when I share that I see the “human side of God.”  It is everywhere, just as the Presence of God is.  We are the voice of Spirit on earth and needless to say we are imperfect.  This for me is because essentially we are of God, but we are NOT GOD.

This is true even for those of us who spend our lives dedicated to representing God in the world through the ministry of our own call.  We can be blessed with the affirmation of ordination and become fully licensed and cloaked with all the stoles and pieces that seemingly transform us into something else – and though we can touch the liminal space with God, alas, we are still very much human and often humbled to our knees when we act otherwise.

We are of flesh and bone, we come from dust and to the dust we shall return and through our humanity we offer a glimpse of what God is. We can only offer what we know of God and some have more experience of God than others.  Sometimes we are able to really get it right and when we do, we know it and we rejoice.  When we care for each other, extend compassion into our families, communities and the world and truly live out the commandment to “love one another as I have loved you,” we show the very best of God’s human side.

There is another aspect however to the human side of God for me, though, and it is the piece that we struggle with the most.   We all too often fail to come to the realization that we are just that; human, imperfect, subject to falling short and not always able to do things perfectly. Only God is perfect and yet we want so much to emulate that we forget.  We have such a long way to go but I pray faith, live faith and continue to see the face of God in the people I encounter.  I honor the human side of God and I pray that together we can someday get closer to swinging open the secret door of real transformation.

“Be strong and courageous…your God is with you wherever you go.” Jos 1:9
