2012 Annual Gathering Report of the Associate Conference Minister for Church Relations

by the Rev. Libby Tigner

     When our Annual Gathering convenes on June 8, I will have just completed four months in this new position, which was created by the Board of Directors in late November.  According to the job description, my primary areas of responsibility are:

     Leadership Placement and Development, which means helping clergy find positions churches in the area, assisting churches who are searching for a new minister, and building relationships in that process;

     Community Life Building, which includes event planning, for things like the Annual Gathering and Church Vitality events, and also creating opportunities for connections and relationship building across the Conference, and

     Financial Development.  Later this month, I’ll be attending the second of probably six classes which I plan to take through the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. From these classes I hope to acquire the skills that are needed to help both the Conference and local churches in fundraising through the annual stewardship campaigns and planned giving, with the goal of improving our collective financial health.

     We are already busy planning to host the United Church of Christ General Synod here in SCNC at the Long Beach Convention Center next June.  This is a wonderful opportunity for us to offer an extravagant welcome to 3,000 UCC members and friends from all over the country and around the globe.  As the moderator of the General Synod and as part of the staff at the Conference, I’m working closely with the Local Arrangements Committee, led by Paul Kittlaus and Janet Vandevender.  We’re hoping to have volunteers from all around the Conference as our hospitality ambassadors – you’ll hear more about that during Annual Gathering.

     And, of course, hosting General Synod costs money.  The Board of Directors has approved a fundraising vision and plan to meet the costs of General Synod and also make financial gifts to Pilgrim Pines and to the Justice and Witness Ministries of the UCC.  Your churches will be asked this fall to participate in those efforts.

     I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to work with the Conference Board of Directors and with a dynamic and inspiring staff.  Blessings on us all as we work together into the future into which God is calling us!

Libby Tigner
