2012 Annual Gathering Report of the Global Ministry Committee

Submitted by the Joint Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)/United Church of Christ Global Ministry Committee

January 2012 So Cal Group Traveled to Learn More about ‘Challenge and Hope in the Holy Land’. Group Leader and Global Ministries Committee Member Nancy Fowler, third from left, Was One of Four Claremont Students on the Trip.

“Moving beyond our comfort zone” is now often used to describe effective Christian ministry.  The joint Global Ministries Committee offers opportunities for DOC/UCC congregations to “move beyond our comfort zone” by partnering in ministry with Christians outside the U.S..  Members of the Committee are now prepared to provide resources and information to help congregations connect with churches and faith based organizations in the following countries: Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, Turkey, Cuba, Mexico, Israel/Palestine, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Guatemala.

Among the resources the Committee now offers congregations are presentations by missionaries on furlough, a Theology of Partnership as well as materials (covenant statement, booklet and power point) on becoming a Global Mission Church.  The Committee applauds the decision by the Boards of Conference and Region to identify themselves as a Global Mission Region/Conference following the lead of the national bodies of each denomination.  Among our local congregations, Delhaven Christian Church (DOC), La Puente, First Congregational Churches of Claremont and Long Beach and Santa Ana’s Foothill UCC/DOC are now listed among the Global Mission Churches on the Global Ministries web site: (www.globalministries.org)

February 2012 Group of 12 (including Two Committee Members) Helped Build Two Homes in Remote Las Mesas, Nicaragua

To expand the options available to all congregations for global mission partnership, the Committee requests a congregational leader to complete the survey “What in the World Are You Doing and Where?”.  The survey findings will enable the Global Ministries Committee to share what local congregations are now doing in order to help other congregations explore joint ventures in global mission partnership.  Surveys are available at the Global Ministries Committee booth but also can be completed by going to:
