Commemorative Service: Victims of Anti-transgender Violence

By Rob McMurray, First Congregational Church, Riverside-UCC

On Sunday, November 20, an all-inclusive observance of the 13th Annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance was hosted by the Mission Board of First Congregational Church, Riverside-UCC and Safe Haven Community Christian Church, Safe Haven is composed of mostly transgendered people who conduct worship services in FCCR’s sanctuary.  The day was established to remember those who were murdered for being themselves and for looking forward to the day when every living soul is respected.

Participating in the event were Reverend Jane Quandt, Eva-Genevieve! Scarborough (coordinator), Reverend Renee Painter and Chief Sergio Diaz of the Riverside Police Department.  It was rainy Sunday afternoon which befitted the somber yet joyous atmosphere as the names of hundreds of people now deceased because of their identity, were presented and some of their stories read aloud.

The event was featured in the Riverside Press-Enterprise. Here is a link to that article so that you may read more about this important day in the history of our church, transgendered people and for human rights everywhere:  http://www.pe.com/local-news/riverside-county/riverside/riverside-headlines-index/20111120-riverside-commemorating-victims-of-anti-transgender-violence.ece.
