Empire and Resistance: Reshaping Desire From the Bottom Up

Irvine United Congregational Church will be hosting the Rev. Dr. Joerg Rieger on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the 9:00 and 11:00 am services.  His sermon title is, “Christ and Empire: The Radical Christian Heritage.”  Then at 12:30 pm there will be a special Italian Luncheon in his honor at a cost of $10 per person and reservations are required and limited.  We will then offer a free Lecture at 2 pm entitled: “Empire and Resistance: Reshaping Desire from the Bottom Up.”

Desire is a key problem both in religion and economics. How do we deal with it at a time when our desires are programmed to mislead us, contributing to an ever-growing gap between rich and poor?  Rieger argues that the Judeo-Christian traditions present viable alternatives for reshaping desire and fresh ways of living together.”

Dr. Rieger is the Wendland-Cook Endowed Professor of Constructive Theology at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, Texas.  He is author to several books including: Christ & Empire and his latest book: No Rising Tide. This presentation is part of the Lecture series: “Courage to Act for Justice – When the Bush Stops Burning” and details are available at: www.couragetoact.wordpress.com.    For more information about IUCC events please go to: www.iucc.org or contact the IUCC Director of Adult Programs, Robinmarie McClement at: Robinmarie@iucc.org or the church office at: 949-733-0220 x205.  IUCC  is located at: 4915 Alton Parkway, Irvine, CA 92604.
