2011 Annual Gathering Report from Retirement Housing Foundation

     The mission of RHF (Retirement Housing Foundation), a national nonprofit organization, is to provide various housing options and services for older adults, low income families, and persons with disabilities in an environment which enhances their quality of life – physically, mentally, and spiritually. RHF is committed to serving its residents and their local communities.

     Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF) was incorporated on March 17, 1961, so this annual report is produced as we celebrate RHF’s 50th anniversary of Caring About People.

     We remember our very modest beginnings.

     Two United Church of Christ (UCC) clergy, Rev. Clark Harshfield and Rev. Reinhold Klein, together with rancher/farmer/businessman Steve Pilibos were the incorporators.  The Plymouth Foundation of the Southern California UCC Conference provided $5,000 and Mr. Pilibos another $2,000.  The Benevolent Association of the Evangelical and Reformed Church (E&R) in Southern California provided an additional $35,000.

     The launch was modest, but the vision was big.  By the time of this publication RHF has grown to 163 communities in 25 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

     Thirty-seven of our communities are located in the SCNC-UCC representing 4,979 apartments (families, older adults, and persons with disabilities), 180 assisted living units, 20 memory care units and 147 skilled nursing beds.

Highlights from 2010 include;

– Our mission continues to grow. We welcomed Desert Sage in Hermiston, Oregon into the RHF family.  This 24-apartment HUD 202 was built by the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society in 1999. We also completed the acquisition of a 372-unit affordable senior community – Shepherd Park (Hartford, CT) – our first community in Connecticut and a 312-unit affordable family property – Riverside Village (Leominster, MA) – from State Street.

– We continued with the $43 million rehab project on Angelus Plaza, our 1,093 affordable apartment complex for low income seniors, located in downtown Los Angeles. It is expected to be completed in June of 2011.

     The RHF Foundation continues to be approved as a Combined Federal Campaign member, which makes it easier for federal employees to make a donation to us through payroll deduction and/or check. RHF continues to work with the conferences of the UCC, CHHSM, and ecumenically with other churches, as well as cities, counties, states, service clubs, and national organizations. Since our founding, we have grown to become one of the nation’s largest nonprofit sponsors and managers of affordable housing for seniors, low income families and persons with disabilities.
