Trip to Scotland and Ireland

Justice and Peace: Birmingham to Belfast
May 25-June 12, 2011

This course will examine the techniques of nonviolent direction action used by the US Civil Rights Movement and compare and contrast those with similar struggles to end apartheid in South Africa and bring peace in Northern Ireland.  There will be additional reflection on whether such means could help bring peace in Israel/Palestine.  Travel will be first to Iona, Scotland, center of the reconciling Iona Community and will then proceed to the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland. We will also spend time in Glasgow, Belfast, and Dublin as well as the Donegal region of Ireland. We will meet with John Bell of the Wild Goose Resource Group, whose music and liturgy is foundational for the Iona Community. We will have time with leaders of peace movements in Northern Ireland—Paul Arthur and South Africa—Wilhelm Verwoerd.
