Reliving The Dream

by Rev. Craig Peterson, Pastor at Woodland Hills Community Church

Do you remember much of what happened during your worship service on Sunday, January 15, 1961?  The folks at Woodland Hills Community Church(WHCC) do.  That morning, they welcomed a young preacher who was celebrating his 33rd birthday.  The individual preached a sermon titled “Three Dimensions of a Complete Life”.  His name?  Martin Luther King, Jr.!  Later that afternoon, he also delivered a public address at Canoga Park High School which he called, “The Future of Integration”.

To commemorate this historic occasion, Woodland Hills Community Church has joined with other community groups for a weekend celebration, February 13-16, 2011.

The weekend will kick off with an Art Show at the Canoga Park Youth Arts Center (7222 Remmet Ave) with an opening on Thursday, January 13 from 4:00-6:00 PM.  Contacts for the art show are Joy Taylor and Traci Waco (818-346-8355).

The weekend celebration will continue on Saturday, January 15 with participation in the National Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.  One group of volunteers will contribute to the culmination of the “I Have a Dream Wall” at the Canoga Park High School’s campus (6850 Topanga Canyon Blvd in Canoga Park).  You can contact site coordinator Frances Reyes from The Courage Campaign at 818-237-0434 if you would like to participate.  Another group of volunteers will help provide a meal at The Valley Family Shelter (7843 Lankershim Blvd in North Hollywood) between the hours of 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.  Please contact site coordinator Virginia Classick from Progressive Christians Uniting at 818-225-0410 if you would like to help with the meal.

The Saturday events will end with a dinner at WHCC’s Harter Hall (21338 Dumetz Road; Woodland Hills) that will feature recently discovered audio from Dr. King’s address at Canoga Park High 50 years ago!  Tickets are $25 per person, and can be ordered by calling the church’s office at 818-346-0820.

The celebration will culminate on Sunday, January 16 during our 10:00 AM worship service that will feature excerpts from the sermon delivered by Rev. Dr. King at WHCC that unforgettable Sunday 50 years ago  titled “Three Dimensions of a Complete Life”.

We hope you will consider joining us for one – or better yet, ALL – of these events that will honor Dr. King and the way his dream has helped shape us all!
