Dancing, Singing and Tithing with Glee

by Roger Barkley, Lead Pastor, Congregational Church of Northridge

Dancing, singing, tithing…with glee.  A beautiful picture and when “glee” becomes Glee, as in the hit TV show, quite a lively one.

       Tithing with glee?

The Congregational Church of Northridge encourages members to tithe – and lives out that understanding as a church.  We have in recent years had the joy of tithing the proceeds from some unexpected “gifts.”  This year, for example, we were able to tithe with great joy (and Glee!) when the 20th Century Fox Studio used our beautiful church to film two scenes, including a wedding, in our sanctuary.

As the air date arrived excitement mounted.  On that chilly Tuesday evening the members of our church youth group, including my own 17-year-old, gathered in our living room.  Fueled by drinks, chips and anticipation, we watched “our” Glee episode, a musical production that mimicked the famous YouTube video of the cast dancing down the aisle in a wedding scene.

We were thrilled, too, by the generous fee we received – a financial “booster shot” which both helps our church and augments our mission donations.  The congregation selected two of the agencies we support financially and with volunteerism as recipients of our Glee tithe – Wyngs, www.wyngs.org that assists persons with spinal cord injuries and Hands4Hope, www.hands4hope.org that provides tutoring and mentoring for at-risk teens in the San Fernando Valley.

What a blessing…a double blessing.  God is good
