| Quick News From Jane
Jane Fisler Hoffman, Interim
Conference
Minister |
Dear SCNC Folk,
Based on the clear and strong policy action of
our 2005 Annual Gathering in advocating for marriage
rights, an action supported by our northern California
UCC neighbors and the United Church of Christ General
Synod, the Northern California Nevada Conference
Minister and I have sent a letter of appreciation and
support to the Episcopal bishops who recently stepped
forward in opposition to proposition 8. Following
is our press release and a link to the letter
itself. Please know that I am aware
that not every individual and congregation in our
Conference agrees with this position or this
letter. I understand that and respect the right of
all in our United Church of Christ to stand where each
needs to stand on matters of faith. We are a
church that understands that our unity does not depend
on agreement on every matter but on our commitment to
Jesus Christ as head of the church. I treasure as
brothers and sisters in Christ those who disagree with
this position and appeal to all who either agree
or disagree to engage with one
another in respect and care during the weeks
ahead. However, even recognizing that all
in this Conference do not agree, I have written and
signed this letter based on our Conference position, as
well as my own conviction. I wanted all of you to
know of this action and the press release.
In
Christ,

| Press Release |
| Letter of Gratitude and Support to
Episcopal Bishops of California for Opposing Proposition
8
On September 16, 2008 Rev. Dr. Mary Susan Gast,
Conference Minister of Northern California Nevada Conference
and Rev. Dr. Jane Fisler Hoffman, Interim Conference Minister
of Southern California Nevada Conference, sent a letter of
gratitude to their ecumenical colleagues in the Episcopal
Church for opposing Proposition 8. "We are in complete
agreement with you on this important matter of civil rights
and want you to know that you do not stand alone in the
religious community in this position."
In 2005, following in a historic tradition
of standing for human and civil rights dating back to the
Amistad captives, the United Church of Christ General Synod
approved a resolution affirming equal marriage rights for all
persons. The Southern California Nevada Conference was
the originator of that resolution and was supported by the
Northern California Nevada Conference. View the entire
letter here. | |
