Dear SCNC
Friends,
Friends: At the recent General Synod, a
resolution regarding health care justice was approved
and the UCC has a long history of activism on behalf of
health care for all. Recent photos of thousands of
people waiting all night for free health care in LA
provided by an organization established to serve in
developing nations reminds us that on this matter, our
nation is UNdeveloped. Whether or not
a person of faith agrees with particular versions of
proposed reform, we must work for justice for all of
God's people. This time is crucial for the
possibility of taking at least one step toward such
reformative justice and our UCC is part of an
organization that will be sponsoring a Faith Leader's
call with President Obama on August 19. You
can be part of this call--I'm signed up to
join! Information about how to
participate is below in a note from our minister for
Public Health, Barbara Baylor.
One of our own pastors, Jane Quandt, Riverside UCC,
has shared her urging for our participation and has
added this excellent information and an idea for sharing
in this opportunity: People do not have to
agree that health reform is necessary in order to listen
in. It will be a very structured call where designated
speakers/questioners are selected in advance. Everyone
else will be muted. Callers should, however, register in
advance. At my church I'm going to invite people to come
to the church so we can listen to the call together on a
speakerphone....or they can call in from home or work if
that is more convenient.
Do join us next Tuesday for the call. We can
make a difference.
